This renowned letter was penned by Leo Tolstoy in 1908, in reply to a letter from the editor of Free Hindustan. It eventually made its way into the hands of M. K. Gandhi, who, after confirming with Tolstoy that he did in fact write it, and obtaining his permission to publish it, did so—saying in his introduction:
“To me, as a humble follower of that great teacher whom I have long looked upon as one of my guides, it is a matter of honour to be connected with the publication of his letter, such especially as the one which is now being given to the world.”
We believe the wisdom conveyed therein by Tolstoy to be very important, ranking up there with his other works of profound wisdom such as The Kingdom of God is Within You and The Law of Love Vs.
